Since the late 1950’s the area spanning the Texas Panhandle into Oklahoma approximately 160 miles long and 30 miles wide known as the Granite Wash Shale has yielded production. Its tight gas sandstone formation stores gas deposits in plentiful pockets at multiple zones but the variability of these deposits , between 300 feet to 19000 feet , in the thick sediment makes it a difficult and costly to drill.
With the re-introduction of muli-stage hydraulics fracs and advanced horizontal drilling technology a very good rate of return has been seen in the Granite Wash shale area. Due to the increasing success in the rates of return in the area an increase in production has been seen, especially in 2001 & 2012.
Initially, only a small number of companies had a stake in the area but with the increase in producer interest more investment opportunities surfaced bringing in many independent companies. The outlook for this area is very positive and it has become a popular play.
